PBR Materials in glTF export

$

@Centaur wrote:

I have just submitted an update for my glTF exporter, in version 1.3.0 I have added the ability to overwrite the default material values specific to PBR.
Sketchup materials only support color, texture and transparency, so when rendered the models look flat and dull.

PBR means Physically Based Rendering, and it defines Metallic and Roughness factors for materials.

Metallic: A material can either be a non-metal (dielectric) or metal with full reflectance, or anything in between.
Roughness: A material can range from smooth (and glossy) to rough.

I have also added emissive control, and doubleSided override flags.

This is done by changing the name of the material such that it includes the following:

metallic=nnn, where nnn is in the range 0.0 to 1.0 (sorry, only eleven possible values at the moment, let me know if you need more flexibility).
roughness=nnn, where nnn is in the range 0.0 to 1.0
doubleSided=true or doubleSided=false
emissive=rrr,ggg,bbb where rrr,ggg,and bbb are in the range of 0.0 to 1.0

Emissive materials ‘glow’ with the color that you specify, so are great for car headlights, creepy glow-in-the-dark eyes, that sort of thing.

If, for example, you have gold in your model, you can change the name of the material from ‘gold’ to ‘gold metallic=1.0 roughness=0.0’
Please note: I have a default Metallic-factor of 0.1, and default Roughness-factor of 0.9 in the glTF exporter.

Here is the same model, exported with the default material name, and then exported with the extra definitions in the material name. You may spot a subtle difference.

Here is a 3D Warehouse model, in this case MJC’s model of a Cylon Raider from the 1970’s Movie and TV Series ‘Battlestar Galactica’

In the first instance, the model is exported ‘as is’, and in the second case it is exported with a metallic factor for the hull and emissive factor for the engine exhaust flame.
In this case I’ve changed the name of the hull material to ‘CylonRaider metallic=0.4 roughness=0.1’

You will notice that the second model has a more prominent engine exhaust, and better light reflections from its more metallic surface.

Cylon%20Raider Cylon%20Raider%20PBR

Let me know if you have any requests for the exporter!

CompoScene update and about making comics, manga and video games

CompoScene Update v2.0.5

CompoScene is a SketchUp extension which allows you to create and export multiple rendering channels for compositing in something like Photoshop.

People in the comics and manga industry save time drawing backgrounds by first creating a 3d model in SketchUp and then they use CompoScene to automate the process of exporting the scenes for further detailing.

This version now allows you to Export either one scene at a time or all the scenes in a single click. Another feature that was requested was for the export setting to be saved for the next time the tool is opened. People were frustrated before because they had to change the settings again and again but with this version, there is no need for that anymore.

Added the new option to toggle the antialias on or off for the export settings, and fixed a bug that did not allow for the transparency options to be turned off.

Also added a “More Tools” button that will take you to a page were all my SketchUp Extensions are available for purchase.

A Blog button so you can be up to date with what I am doing. I am soon going to start a series of videos of me using SketchUp to create and play games right inside SketchUp. I am also interested in how to create comics and manga with SketchUp so if you interested in that keep an eye out.

Finally, I added a Forum button and there is where you go if you have a question, a request, an idea, or just to talk about how SketchUp can be used as a game engine or manga creating tool.

Alright, this is it, for now, for does who use the plugin I will love to see what you have created…Thanks in advance!

Hey sketchup community
So I tried rendering this scene over here and I even put omni’s inside but when I render its completely black even if I use the interior bright AA setting… What problems may cause this because I mean I have online components from manufacturers and from warehouse but they shouldn’t be a problem when rendering I believe…

Looking for an extension for new / existing shadow analysis

@alexlj wrote:

Hi

I regularly do shadow diagrams (new vs existing) at work and find the process really daunting.

The aim is to identify the new shadows introduced by the new building after the existing structure is demolished.

these are the steps we do at work:

  1. export the shadows of the existing site to jpegs

  2. export the shadows of the new site to jpegs

  3. import the these jpegs into photoshop layers

  4. reduce the new shadow layer transprancy to 50% so the difference is in a grey colour representing the new shadows

  5. use the magic wind to select the grey areas. fill with a blue colour

repeat the steps for the other daylight hours and different seasons.

is there an extension or software to automake this process?

Hi,

just seeing if anyone has made a brick veneer wall assembly in Profile 3 builder. (Bricks on a external wall sitting on damp course)

I have attached some snap shots of my results. I would like to be able to get a accurate brick count by using the bricks as components. Its kind of working ok but just interested if there is a better result in there somewhere

LO Extension wishlist

@eneroth3 wrote:

Since SU 2018 SketchUp has had a Ruby API for LO documents. I have no information on the subject but suspects/hopes a live API is coming some day, so we can use extensions within LayOut. I was thinking we could start a list of what extensions we would like in LayOut. I’ll start!

  • SketchUp like Select, Move and Rotate

  • Tools for assuring stacked viewports have exact matching cameras

  • Selection Toys

  • Streamlined UI for setting viewport scale (just write 1:100 or 1" = 45cm in a text box, no list to search in)

  • Setting scale for isometric drawings (these needs to be slightly scaled up as the axes the scale should apply to are not in the image plane)

  • Scaled Perspectives (scale applies at a custom depth, e.g. the active section cut)

Any other ideas?

Hey guys! so I have a building that I’m working on that is 30’ high to the pitch and I have this perspective to generate on podium. I don’t know how I should tackle the lighting for this since I am not an expert on the lighting on podium but any suggestions on what I should do? I have a lazer tag place on the right and I would like the walls to glow a little without affecting the rest of the colors in the space. How should I do this?

Skatter Installation Not Working

@ZaKeeper wrote:

I recently purchased Skatter for Sketchup, and am having trouble getting it installed. I’ve tried on two different machines, both running macOS Mojave and Sketchup Pro 2018 (version 18.1.1180). The installation and activation process seem to complete successfully. However, after restarting Sketchup, Skatter does not appear in the Extension Manager or the Extensions menu, and the Skatter tool box does not appear. I’ve tried rebooting the computers, re-running the installation… nothing seems to work. I went to the Sketchup webpage and review the installation tutorial (which is dated) and the FAQ section, but found not support. There was not number to call for technical support either; just an applet to send an e-mail with the description of the problem.

How do I get the Skatter extension up and running?

Line types styles

I use Sketchup Make 2016 and have been using various versions for years. The most noticeably absent feature is the ability to draw different line types - dashed, thick, dotted, thin, dimension, etc. etc Is there any “free” add in that will permit these various line types? Alternatively, I might be willing to pay for sketchup if I knew that this functionality would be included, but I cannot tell if that feature is included. Can you tell me if it is?

I most frequently use sketchup make to draw 2D drawings for woodworking projects for my hobby projects.

thanks,

List of extensions related to SketchUp crashing

It has been pointed out in some forums that extensions can be causing SketchUp to crash. Some people report SketchUp crashing on startup while some others at closing and some in the middle of work.
No one seems to be able to identify the culprit.
Can someone at Trimble create a database where we can all report the extensions we currently use and therefore narrow down a few candidates or combination of candidates that cause crashing?

How do I change Pivot point in MSPhyscics or accomplish this?

Hi everyone. Thx for letting me into this forum. I have a “burning” question, which I guess its quite simple to accomplish: I want a lid to open - (pivot points not at the end - but at the sides - halways, approx). The lid shall “push” a bottom lid out as it opens. See attachement. How can I achieve this? Thanx a lot :slight_smile:

The top lid (a box) is supposed to pivot around center, while touching the bottom lid, it shall push this out. As I am a new member - I can only open ONE picture. Here it is:

I design kitchens & have been toying with Lumion as apparently easier than most to learn but not sure the price tag is worth it for interior shots/walkthrough’s alone? I have no experience with rendering so like the idea of real time renderes as learning curve & results quicker.

Hello there! I currently use Sketchup 2015, as it is not only the only version I can afford, but the only version my computer can support. I need to export several files to an .obj format for use in an animation software. However, I can not find the necessary extensions. Can anyone help?

Update: I just realized I probably should have added this in the original post. My computer can not support Blender. It’s simply too old. I’m exporting these files, so a friend with a newer computer can use them. I also do not currently have a credit card, or paypal. I can only use the free extensions.

3Dconnexion Space Mouse is using up all of my application memory on my Mac?

@TheGuz wrote:

We have been working very closely with 3Dconnexion to figure out why people see “run out of application memory” issues or lockups while using their Space Mouse on their Mac (macbook pro, imac, mac pro). It’s a fantastic device, but the included extension has been causing memory leaks on some people’s OSX machines.

While they work on updating that extension, you might try this, since it has helped some users. Upgrade your Mac to Mojave, download and install the latest version of SketchUp Pro, and install the latest 3Dconnexion software.

If that helps you (or not), please let us know here.
