Animating In SketchUp

$

I’m new to SketchUp and exploring what it can do. I just came upon an animation extension (should I post a link?) which is boosting my enthusiasm for SketchUp considerably. I’m used to animating in my video editor and would love to do so in SketchUp as well.

So here’s a thread about SketchUp animation, which I’ve started hoping to learn more. I’m a newbie in SketchUp Make, but please feel free to take animation conversations where ever you wish to go, as any discussion will be educational here. If you’re animating in SketchUp and would like to show us what you’re doing, please do.

Looking for people interested in Beta testing GhostMenu, a new extension for SketchUp

$

Hi All,

I’ve been working on an app that I’m currently calling GhostMenu™, It promises a new way of working in the SketchUp UI, and does some pretty cool things (if I do say so myself).

Current Functionality

  • Adds a popup tool menu that will pop to where your mouse is ready for you to quickly access your familiar toolbar tools such as draw etc…
  • Adds a popup view control menu to make switching between views, as well as turning on and off rendering options really easy. Things like toggling hidden objects, or hidden geometry.
  • A texture palette that allows you to save your current active texture as an instantly recolorable material so that you can get realistic color variants in a couple of clicks.
  • Theoretically works from 2017 to 2020 +

I’d love people to help test it, (Currently on Windows, but soon on Mac)
I’m hoping to find 10-12 lead users to help test it, and to provide early feedback. Sign up at the form below.

Possibilities for Developers
I’m interested in also hearing from other extension developers. The unique approach to this app and extension allows much richer and more immersive UI’s to be built than what is currently possible in SketchUp. I’d love to learn about how this could support your extensions, with the goal of creating simple slick and context aware experiences.

Check it out
Take a look at the screenshots to get a sense of the current capabilities. I wanted to make a video, but don’t yet have the abilities… You’re gonna need to use your imaginations on how smooth and slick this thing is.

Can I get help here with a simple MS physics problem

$

I’m trying to create something like a Japanese water feature where a short vertical section of bamboo gets filled with water then tips over horizontally, empties and returns to the vert. position . . . rinse and repeat.

Except I only need for it to lower down do the horizontal position where it can remain and continue to drain.

This will be for a roof downspout to allow roof rain water collected to empty out into yard away from house. I will be able to leave downspout extension in the vert. position and not be concerned about keeping an eye on possible chances of rain when I’m unavailable.

I’ve tried setting up the physics problem but don’t seem to be able to understand how to get the hinge and downspout connected. I’d like to know how close I am for the small shoe extension I’ve added to working.

TIA

downspout hinge.skp (614.6 KB)

1st edit: Sorry, I should have posted this to sketchUcation forum. Had gone there first but didn’t look hard enough for the forum link.

2nd ed: Haha jokes on me. Doesn’t appear a .skp file can be U/L’d to sUc. I think I’m close enough that a minor tweak or 2 in reality will suffice.

Help With Peforated Vray Texture

Hi,

I’m using a standard vray texture called Metal Pattern L bmp which is peforated rectangles.

I’m attempting to apply it to a 25mm thick flooring. However, it doesnt appear “thick” when rendered. I’ve attatched a picture to explain what I mean.

Is it possible to make peforated textures thick? (25mm in this case). Any help answering this question would be appriciated. Many thanks

Background in IRender nxt

I am using IRender nXt to render my model. I change the background color in SU from here and set it to white.

However, when it gets rendered, it changes the color to purple or other colors automatically. I have chosen Exterior design and have not changed anything else in the rendering menu. Any idea how I can have a white background?

How to render only visible parts of object

$

Hi there! I’m trying to find a way to get renders of visible parts of object entities in a scene. For example, i have two balls in an image, and i would like to get a render of what is visible from both.
Example image of scene:

Photoshoped out front ball:

The background and the front ball has to be transparent for the usage i’m trying to create.
I know this is possible and easy to do in photoshop/paint.net afterwards, but the plan is to automate this in ruby and do it with numerous objects to make a object builder of sorts. Is there a clever way to do this in sketchup?
I have managed a similar result by simply hiding all but the desired entity and rendering the image once per entity in the scene, but there is then a problem with overlap between objects which are both in front and behind each other.
So far i’ve experimented with SU Podium and V-Ray with not to much luck.

Seems to be very similar to what is asked and solved in Blender in this post:

But i find no such discussion for Sketchup

Sketchup plugin for cost estimate for interior design

$

Hi,
I work for a small interior design firm and we use sketchup pro for all our projects.
We work with a “catalog” of componets which I’ve created through the years, I wanted to use sketchup to generate something similar to a price quotation based on the components in the model (or something similar). We only do interior (i’m not interested in walls costs or similar) and I also don’t need the generated document to be pretty (an excel would be perfect), I just want a list of things based on the components in the models to which I can assigne a name and a price. We also do a lot of wall cladding (wood panneling) so it would be usefull to have something which could see how many m2 of pannels there are in the model and give it a price for m2 (i could create a component and push pull it for the surface I need)
Thanks for the help!

ps: sorry for the bad english, it’s not my first language

Medeek Engineering

I was going to name the engineering module or plugin “Medeek Structural” however I’ve decided to change the name to “Medeek Engineering”.

The plugin icon will now be:

ENGINEERING_PLUGIN_ICON_FILLED

ENGINEERING_PLUGIN_ICON_FILLED_TRANS

The first toolbar I will add is the Beam Engineering Tools which will allow the user to add point loads, distributed loads and supports to beams drawn in the wall plugin:

2dxy site survey extension download issue

We purchased 2DXY Sitesurvey extension. The Sketchup extension manager indicates the extension is signed and downloaded by the developer, but it shows the extension as disabled. I change the button to enable, apply changes and press “install extension”. The program takes me to a windows open file screen, the file name is blank and the extension is “.rbz” for the file type. Any suggestions? How do I contact Sketchup for assistance outside of this forum? Thanks

Exporting to Trainz

$

I am using Sketchup 2017 free and Trainz 2010. I have created a model for Trainz - a station - and I have used Ruby TMiX to export the model to Trainz. The export appears to work and I am able to view the exported model in the Trainz mesh viewer. All of the files produced by Ruby TMiX appear to be present. I am able to import these files into Trainz Content manager and the model appears there without any errors, but when I launch Trainz the model does not appear in Surveyor. I assume that the configuration file is correct, but I am not sure what should be there - it is attached below. It has a high poly count. Could this stop Trainz using it?

Dezmo Weld

$

Yet another welding plugin.
weld

Occasionally, I have had some time to learn Ruby again and have seen that the weld method has been integrated into the SU Ruby API.
The weld method takes a set of edges and finds all possible chains of edges and connects them with a curve.
I thought I’d give it a try. I made a test plugin.
Nothing special, besides being very fast, due to the native procedure. But once I did, I thought I’d share it.

image
There are two options:

  1. Marry the selected edges. All. Unless the curve will not cross another curve. They will split where multiple curves meet.

  2. Similar as above, but polygons, circles and arcs will be ignored. Unless there is exactly one edge (can be part of another curve, and selected) at at least one end. (Well, what a beautiful sentence …)

  3. …(Completely optional: Only from menu)

One more thing. You must have a SkechUp 2020.1 (20.1.367) or later version. Otherwise you just get a pretty message or not even that!
